thorngrove Fascinating piano compositions, many with a distinct Monk flavor, and hints here and there of ragtime. So many gems it's hard to pick a favorite. Highly recommended to fans of piano/jazz piano! Favorite track: Selonica.

about

I made this album to commemorate living 70 years. It features solo versions of 21 pieces I’ve written in the past 50 years. Half these pieces have been released before in ensemble form, but the other half have never been released, namely: Air Condition, Iteratio, Every Day, Nero, Long Odds, The One, Sank Sea Set, Pulsations, Vortex, and Whamapo. Solo@70 does not include “hyperpiano,” my inside-the-piano playing, but it is full of “temporal harmony,” my penchant for, or obsession with, poly-periodic or relative time, reflecting my love for the music of Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Andrew Hill, Charles Ives, Gyorgy Ligeti, Thelonious Monk, Olivier Messiaen, and Conlon Nancarrow, among others. My music has been called “Monk to the Monkth” by David Weinstein; “Cubist jazz” by Mark Steven Brooks.
