about

In the months leading up to this recording I had been revisiting 20th century classical music, digging deeper into the work of Stockhausen, Cage, Varese, Webern, Scelsi, Berio, Ligeti, et. al. Of these, it was the music that offered more space, more breathing room, more time to hear the notes, that appealed the most.

When I arrived at Morton Feldman's music I felt as though I'd found home. Even though he composed most of his works in the noise and chaos of New York City, it immediately reminded me of growing up in a small town in Iowa, and of the endless space of the Kansas plains, where I lived for seven years. His use of space, and time, move me.

Before I started this listening journey I knew I wanted to record with Denman and Oscar. I've enjoyed and admired their playing for years. Both have strong, personal voices, and always seem eager to explore. Once we were set up in the studio, all I said to them was I'd been listening to a lot of Feldman's music, and was feeling the need for space.

Our journey was underway.

I hope you enjoy the scenery.
