This solo piano album features two long almost-free improvisations. The first, "Hypopiano," which is 45' long, I made on one condition: no "hyperpiano" (inside-the-piano sounds) allowed. The second, "Dream Variations," which is 60' long, I made for John Morton, who asked for some hyperpiano sounds to go with some processed music-box sounds he sent me from "Variations on a Dream," a piece he was writing. After listening to his sounds, I wrote to him, "Sounds like you want steep attacks." He wrote back, "Yes." So that was the condition there, which I honored often in the breach. The cover art is a sketch of me made in 1992 at Tacheles, a Berlin night club, during a performance I gave with David Simons of his composition "Alien Communications." I never knew the artist's name. She did tell me she had immigrated from Bulgaria after the fall of the Soviet Union.
